iaomi Expects To Double Sales To 15 Million Handsets This Year
Posted Mar 11, 2013 by Victoria Ho
Chinese Android-based phone maker Xiaomi said it will produce 15 million handsets for this year, and expects no overstock. This is double the 7.19 million units that were sold in 2012, which netted the firm 12.6 billion RMB ($2 billion) in revenue after tax.
Its CEO and founder, Lei Jun, said that the firm is going to produce as many handsets as it expects to sell, because it doesn’t intend to hold any overstock. Xiaomi has been accused of deliberately underproducing in order to falsely raise demand for its phones. Lei said that the company doesn’t intend to waste resources overproducing, but admitted that producing only to demand has delayed delivery dates by about three to four months per batch.
The company’s flagship phone, the Mi2, sells for just 1,999 RMB (US$318).
Hans Tung, a partner at Qiming Venture Partners and an investor in Xiaomi, has said in reports that Xiaomi makes about 10 percent profit on its handsets, translating to 1.2 billion RMB ($190 million) in profit for 2012. This exceeded the profit margins of other Chinese handset vendors such as ZTE, Huawei and Lenovo.

KMT honorary chairman receives smartphones as gifts

Kuomintang Honorary Chairman Lien Chan meets Guo Jinlong, secretary of Beijing's Municipal Party Committee in Beijing on Tuesday, and receives two Xiaomi smartphones from Guo.

Lien met with Guo in Beijing and received the smartphones with the words "Mainland and Taiwan join hands to make profits from the world" printed on the back.

The gifts are Redmi phones, a new brand launched by Xiaomi.

According to Beijing Daily News, Lin Bin, president of Xiaomi, revealed that Redmi was chosen probably because it was the result of cooperation across the straits.

"The smartphone was designed and marketed by the mainland, but it was manufactured by Taiwan companies," Lin said.

China smartphone Xiaomi Redmi sells out in less than 3 minutes after S’pore orders open online

February 21, 2014 Technology
A lot of angry posts on Facebook have been generated.

By Belmont Lay
Online orders for the Xiaomi Redmi were open this afternoon in Singapore and within three minutes… and it’s gone.

Retailing for S$169 without any plan, it has been touted as the Android-powered budget smartphone that will end all budget phones.

Get this: The spare batteries and portable battery charger for the Xiaomi are retailing for S$9.99 each.

In mainland China, 100,000 units of the phone sold in under four minutes after it went on sale

In Hong Kong, 10,000 units were sold in the first 36 seconds.

For those who failed to get their orders in, StarHub has said it will offer the Xiaomi Redmi at all its stores from Feb. 27.

In the meantime, Xiaomi Singapore’s Facebook page has attracted hundreds of rants from angry buyers who couldn’t buy the smartphone in time:
