A huge 8.9 richter scale earthquake has just occurred off the north-east coast of Japan and has created ten meter tidal waves. After shocks are also being reported along with cars, ships and buildings being swept away. Some fires are also reported to have broken out. Asia Briefing readers in low lying areas along the East Asia coast are immediately advised to listen to local announcements over warnings and any required action.

Reports are live now on CNN, BBC and other major 'news' channels.

The 8,4 or 8,8/8,9 quake (many conflicting measurments) was huge. Here in Tokyo all public transport stopped (trains, subways, shinkansen) and will not resume anytime soon, many buildings etc. caught fire, more than 4 million households are w/o power etc. I had to walk back home because also some roads are closed.

Up in the NE the city and suburbs of Sendai have been struck by several waves of tsunami, the biggest 8m high. Houses, bridges, cars, buses etc. all washed away. The impact and no. of casualties in Sendai and Miyagi prefecture is still not known. So far 15 people are reported dead but they were victims of a landslide which occured in the aftermath of the big quake. Many people are expected to have died because of the tsunami, not so much because of the quake.

This was the biggest quake that struck JP for decades. The last one in Kobe 1995 (mag. 7,3) and the Kanto earthquake in 1923 (mag. 7,9) were both much smaller. Because the NE is far less populated than the Kanto area people hope that the no. of casualties will not be too high. It will certainly take daylight (tomorrow) to find out more about the losses of life/damages.

What really makes me feel uneasy is the continuous shaking of the earth (aftershocks), just now again .

I am sure Chinese rescuing team will arrive in Japan latest tommorrow to do their part of help. Many survivors may need to be taken out of the rubbles.

Nothing to say about it so far, but to express my dearest condolences to those affected, and wish them all the best.
