Newly declassified documents show that Japan secretly agreed to pay 65-million dollars to the United States before the 1972 return of Okinawa, and asked the country to keep the deal confidential.

The bilateral agreement on the return of Okinawa called for Japan to pay a total of 320-million dollars to the US to cover various costs, including those to remove nuclear weapons. The agreement was approved by Japan's Diet.

But a note declassified on Wednesday says that an agreement was reached between Japanese and US financial authorities for Japan to pay an additional 65-million dollars.

A Foreign Ministry official at the time wrote the memo to several senior officials.

The note says that he had asked US officials to keep the payment secret, as the Japanese government planned to explain to the Diet that 320-million dollars was all Japan would pay to the United States.

Opposition parties, including the then Socialist Party, questioned whether the government had secretly agreed to cover costs unrelated to the return of Okinawa, such as those for repairing the US bases in Futenma and Iwakuni.

A Foreign Ministry panel of experts studying secret pacts did not mention this agreement in its report released on March.

Nagoya University Professor Mikio Haruna, who was a member of the panel, says the note shows that Japan secretly made many payments to the US amid criticism that Japan had bought back Okinawa. He says it is necessary to study the details of the newly discovered deal.

People have been talking about this secret deal for decades. But we couldn't say too much about it due to the lack of evidence much like the secret nuclear pact. Do you know where can we get a copy of that document?

It Does Not Make Sense

So USA occupies part of Japan but Japan has to pay the invader to move out? All the while the GIs rape
Japanese young girls in their own country. Do Japanese have any pride?
Watch your thoughts, for they become words.

Make sense to me.

Nothing is free in this world.

Japan gets the military protection from the USA.

The japanese have to pay for this service.
That simple.

It is sort of tribute from the warlord to the emperor.

Japan today is no more a nation than is Iraq or Afghanistan.

But Ryukyu isn't part of Japan. Neither do the Ryukyuan people look like Japanese or think they are Japanese.

In a map published by a well known Japanese publisher in 1949, it was clearly shown that Ryukyu wasn't part of Japan.
