The church goes on to claim that she is now a "resident of hell, where her rebellion and rage will take full flower."

Elizabeth Edwards, the estranged wife of former Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards, died earlier this week at the age of 61 after a long battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband and three children.

Bashings and homophobia

Canadian news media have provided heart-wrenching accounts of the string of suicides and homophobia-fuelled violence that has occurred recently in the United States. The coverage has made clear the deep-seated hatred and violence that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people (LGBTQ) are subjected to on a daily basis, just for being who they are.

One incident, during which two male teenagers and a 30-year-old man were brutally tortured by members of the Latin King Goonies gang, occurred in the predominantly Hispanic Morris Heights section of the Bronx, New York. Only a week earlier, Tyler Clementi, an 18-year-old Rutgers student leaped to his death from the George Washington bridge after his roommate had posted a live video of him being intimate with another male.

Gay bashings and the KKK

In September at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, college student Lauren Meyer was attacked by two men screaming anti-gay slurs who spotted her wearing a "Legalize Gay" tee. On Sunday, another female student was attacked while walking on campus; two shoved her off the sidewalk, pinned her to a fence, and called her gay. And now comes word on Monday night three black students at UW-Whitewater had their car tires slashed and "KKK" spray-painted on their doors and hoods.

Isolated incidents or not?

So far police remain committed to the "isolated incident" storyline — which may be true. What is also true is that with three bias-related incidents in three months, plenty of students on campus do not feel safe. "I am dismayed by this incident and the two other hate crimes that have occurred," says UW-Whitewater Chancellor Richard Telfer. (Note the use of the phrase "hate crimes"; that's a plus.) "These are senseless acts of violence perpetrated against our community and they must stop."

Hate crime? Sure thing.

Jacob Harshbarger, a 32-year-old resident of San Diego's North Park, was beaten in an alley behind his home early Sunday morning while walking his s — all because, he believes, his three assailants thought he was gay. (He is.) Wearing a "T-shirt with a gay sexual innuendo printed on it," Harshbarger was attacked after one of the men read it and began calling him a "----ing faggot." The beat down, which included kicking him to the ground that left him with a concussion, black eye, and 13 stitches in his lips, featured a soundtrack of "homo" and "come over here and kick the fairy." There is a clue: a cell phone was left behind at the scene, potentially identifying one of the attackers. And yet: The responding San Diego police officer, J. Hebdon, isn't sure this is a hate crime (because Harshbarger's hoodie was zipped up, thus blocking the gay text on his shirt), but a matter of "being in the wrong place at the wrong time." As in being near your house at the same time as being gay?
