A fire in a gold mine trapped 50 workers underground in eastern China, state media reported Friday.
The official Xinhua News Agency said the blaze broke out Friday afternoon at the Lingnan Gold Mine in Zhaoyuan city in eastern Shandong province.
More than 200 workers were pulled out safely though it was unclear how many people had been working in the mine.

Mining deaths jumped again in the first half of this year. Coal mine deaths through June were 1,261, up from 1,175 in the same period last year.

more lip service

Last month, Premier Wen Jiabao ordered mine managers and bosses to accompany workers down into mine shafts in a bid to improve safety.
However, the approach has failed to produce any impact. More than 100 miners have died in the past month; none of those killed were mine bosses or managers - a fact noted with unusual criticism by the typically docile state media.

Union cant protect the miners.

In Mumbai India, servants must be willing to work 7 days a week, otherwise no1 would hire them. They can go strike, but there are so many poor out there willing to take the offers, the strike would only cause them lose their jobs.

In China, the result would be the same. If miners can have unions, the gangsters and mafias can also unit together LEGALLY, and become extremely powerful, the mine owners will pay gangsters to protect them.  Strikes wont help, as there are people out there willing to risk their life for the money.

Such situation will continue until China's economy developing to a extent that people have a choice of not having to working in mine, or serious penalty on mine owners like death penalty.

Please always remember Chinese Ying and Yang, no 100% Ying, no 100% Yang, they complement each other.

The bad complements the good, the good complements the bad.

Very very few westerners understand this, they usually ask for 100% Yang, which makes them so naive.  That is why with so many smart and extremely intelligent consultants, western politcians still dont understand Chinese.

Unions are a must for all workers or at least they should have the right to join one if they so choose.

I worked in public services and the private sector at one time or another, rights and conditions were always better where there was a strong union.

Without them tyrant employers just do what they like.

see, this is a typical way of western thinking.

let me rephrase that :

Unions are a must for all gangsters or at least they should have the right to join one if they so choose.
