After Germany signed a formal alliance pact with Japan in 1941, China had no choice left but to ally with the US, and Chiang thus had to formally fight Japan in all fronts which he really was not ready for...
this statement not correct.
chiang was forced to declare war against his own japanese soldiering buddies in the xian mutiny(dec,1937), which gave the japanese the excuse to invade china in shanghai. then the pro-america factions in chiang's army tried their best to put up a fight, in order to get support from america.
but chiang himself totally rejected the war against japan, as in the most detailed book describing the xian incident by basil miller(generalisimo chiang kai shek, xtian liberator of china.), thru out the faked war against japan, chiang, the japanese and the shanghai mob boss du, were partners in a opium traffic deal. the whole hillside of chongking was color purple by opium poppies.
in fact, from everything chiang did, it appeared he planned a revenge on the mutineers, in the form of nanking massacre and the ensuing yellow river flooding(1938-1942, with 30 millions starved). chiang didnt fight the japanese. all he did was a mission to rescue the brits in burma, and escaped successfully from a japanese assault.
