It's not true that the Shinkansen has older trains. Look at these photos. Latest state of art design.

satsu, it is surely a great technical performance, but the experience show another face of these massive investissment for high tech train: other lines are neglected, closed: this happened in most europe countries with high speed train, this happened in Japan and taiwan , this happened in US, this is already partially true in China and will cetainley become true too: these high tech lines reflect inequality in modern countries: all is for big cities, but go to the countryside and you still find 50 years old train, when the line are not closed. This will certainley bring economic progress if you solve the equation high tech and lowest price ticket/ who can afford, but not to countryside place who most need transportation system.

Yes, secondary lines are sometimes closed but the reason is that they're not commercially viable. What counts in our world is profitability not nostalgia.

I am not saying they are much older, but the Chinese train, is still being built!  It is the newest of the new.  The only operational fast train that I know of is Tianjin Beijing although I heard Guangzhou HK was comingalong.

The Japanese Shinkansen is fully operational, and thus is slightly older than the new Chinese train.
