Re. auto industry - I understand that the Obama administration implemented a program to stimulate auto sales (for a rather short time of two weeks) and from what I read it is successful. They ...

yes but the US industry is not expanding capacity, it will likely be closing plants for some time now.
but I am talking about China, the current sales are in large part due to a huge drop in tax on cars, incentive, and government stimulus.  What happens if China wants to reinstate its vehicle taxes or what if the roads in big cities simply make it to slow to drive to warrant buying a new car.
In the next three years
Nissan will triple capacity
Toyota will double
Honda will double
Audi will double
Mercedes will double
BMW will double
Volkwagon will increase by 2/3
Ford will double
GM will nearly double
Fuji will enter the market

even with substantial growth figures, does that look sustainable to anyone?

You know what the most important thing for BMW was this year, making sure that the domestically produced 3 and 5 series would be classified as made in China so that government officals could charge them to the government stimulus plan.

China is a huge market and there is enough room for much stronger growth (ok, environmentalists may differ). I understand at least from Toyota and Honda that they also intent to use their China made cars for exports to SE Asian countries. Not sure about others.

china can not save the world alone!
it need other power's coordination, especially the US.
BUT, it is obvious the world economy can't revive without china.

We live in interesting times

Correct me otherwise, but I read today China has 1.5 trillion of US currency

I also read there was over 6 trillion in world currency reserves

of which about 4.5 trillion is in USD (3/4)

Things will be fine for some time yet so it seems and it will take a long time to spend that money
