Taking the abuse of internet into account, the news may be fake…
May 31st, in Shaanxi Hanzhong County the masses began an indiscriminate killing to all dogs. They declared proudly the county would be the first dog-clean county in China.
The reason is that seven people died of rabies disease recently. The government claimed every pet-dog owner must register and examine before June. But actually, they use the registered address to kill dogs. Local police and volunteers beat all dogs they find, in street or at home.
A grandma took her dog to market. They drew the dog out and kill it in front of her. And many owners had to watch their dogs beaten at home. More than ten thousand dogs have been killed.
But some information from the county said it is not true. They had never killed pet-dogs, only street dogs.
An unlinkable story from the South China Morning Post relays the chilling tale of Chongqing municipality's Wanzhou district, where the local government has ordered that all pet dogs be put to death because a resident died of rabies. Just when you think being a dog owner in China can't get any scarier ...
That was in 2007. Another place, another time ..
So it is very likely not an internet scam but rather the sad truth.
Control midnight barking, out of control breeding, attacks on people and disease. Then steps like this will not be needed.
The government makes these decisions to protect the well-being of the people. Public safety is first. The lives of dogs are second. I cannot imaging culling privately-owned dogs unless there was a serious risk to the people.
I say this as a dog lover, as someone who supports the government's decisions, and as someone who considers the people of China first.
