I know tons of people in the states who drink green tea. It is extremely common in the western and northeastern parts of the United States.

On top of that, people do recognize China as having the best tea, it's just not as profitable as it is in China so it isn't everything. Just because something is not in high demand doesn't mean it isn't recognized.

I've tried green tea before.  As positive as I am on Chinese culture, I tried to like it.  "Mmm, goood *gag*".  I also tried the varieties, such as jasmine tea.  That was slightly better but was so weak, it really simply tasted like hot water.  I wish I liked your tea because then I could more fully enjoy China but I simply don't, it tastes like crap.  To be fair, I don't like brown tea either.  Well, except for the tea my mom makes (rarely).  It's brown tea that is made by leaving a clear glass container (sealed) out in the sun all day, with the leaves inside.  Even then, it needs sugar and ice to make it worth drinking.

Guess I'll stick to water.
