Gangland murders seem to be widespread in the UK!

Life for fan who organised murder

Thursday, May 21, 2009

A security firm boss who organised a gangland assassination from an executive box at Manchester United has been jailed for life.

Bobby Speirs, 41, sat at Old Trafford while "pulling the strings" from afar to murder a rival at a pub two miles away in Salford.

Mr Justice Griffith Williams sentenced him at Manchester Crown Court to serve a minimum term of 23 years in jail.

Drinkers watching the same Sunday-afternoon televised game on March 12, 2006, fled in terror as his hired hitmen, Carlton Alveranga, 20, and Richard Austin, 19, burst in, masked and brandishing handguns, just before the half-time whistle blew.

Their target, David Totton, who was drinking at a table, was blasted and another man, Aaron Travers, was also hit as Austin pulled the trigger six times, Manchester Crown Court heard.

But Alveranga's 9mm handgun jammed - with fatal consequences. They were jumped on by drinkers and disarmed. A known Moss Side gangster in the pub at the time is suspected of then shooting the assassins with their own weapons, before they staggered outside and were beaten as they lay dying.

Totton and Travers were severely injured but survived. They refused to co-operate with the police inquiry. It is believed the planned executions were arranged due to a loss of "face" suffered by Speirs after a petty dispute between him and Totton over admission to a Manchester nightclub.

Police believe Speirs recruited Ian McLeod, a boss of the notorious south Manchester Doddington Gang, who provided the "manpower" - Alveranga and Austin - whose deaths were simply "collateral damage", the jury was told.

Speirs fled to Spain within days of the shooting on March 12, 2006. He was extradited back to the UK in August last year.

Church 'failed to halt child abuse'

Wednesday, May 20, 2009

The Catholic Church was aware long-term sex offenders were repeatedly abusing children while working in Ireland's church and state-run institutions, a damning report has revealed.

The Child Abuse Commission detailed a catalogue of disturbing and chronic sexual, physical and emotional abuse inflicted on thousands of disadvantaged, neglected and abandoned children by both religious and lay staff over the last 70 years.

The dangers to the children were not taken into account, the inquiry found.

Judge Sean Ryan, who chaired the commission, concluded that when confronted with evidence of sex abuse, religious authorities responded by transferring the sex offenders to another location, where in many instances they were free to abuse again.

"There was evidence that such men took up teaching positions sometimes within days of receiving dispensations because of serious allegations or admissions of sexual abuse," the report said.

"The safety of children in general was not a consideration."

Angry exchanges took place between commission staff and victims of abuse, who were barred from the report's launch in a central Dublin hotel.

No abusers will be prosecuted as a result of the inquiry.

Institutions run by religious orders, including industrial and reform schools, institutions for the disabled, orphanages and ordinary day schools have been examined by the Commission over the past nine years.

While the names of alleged individual perpetrators have not been published - except for those already convicted by the court - the inquiry produced specific findings against 216 facilities. The Sisters of Mercy and Christian Brothers, which ran the largest number of children's institutions, were among the long list of orders investigated.

330 arrested in sex offenders blitz
Wednesday, May 20, 2009

More than 330 people have been arrested by officers targeting the UK's highest-risk sex offenders in the last year, figures have showed.

The Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) unit, which runs a "most wanted" website as part of its work, has arrested more than 700 suspected offenders since its launch three years ago and helped save nearly 350 children, 139 in the last 12 months alone.

A CEOP spokesman said it had also helped dismantle or disrupt 166 networks of offenders since 2006, 82 in the last year, but warned that tactics being deployed by those who target children were also evolving.

Jim Gamble, chief executive of the CEOP Centre, said it was "easy to be alarmist" and suggest that "technology is opening doors for offenders to abuse children quicker than we can close them".

But he went on: "This is not about technology - this is about people. There is no distinction between the online and offline worlds. This is about the behaviour of offenders manipulating any environment to abuse children.

"Child protection is everybody's business and we should afford our children the same protection online that we would give them in the park or playground - - that is our approach and that collective response has already hit home."

A total of 334 suspected child sex offenders have been arrested for offences ranging from possession of indecent images to rape in the last year, CEOP said.

The figures, published in the organisation's annual review for 2008/09 and covering work specifically involving CEOP teams, showed grooming was still the number one offence reported to the centre.

But whereas before this was done primarily through instant messaging, there is a "fast-growing trend" of exploiting children through vast, integrated social networking sites, a CEOP spokesman said.

The organisation also found an average of four reports a day needed immediate action as a result of a child being at risk.

Bloody, yes, it is like that in the UK.....isolated incidents. You seem to relish concentrating on the negatives and deliberatly omit the positives. Hardly fair is it? Now, if we were to do the same about China......you'd be crying foul!
