The other side of addiction is not always the drug itself but socio-affective factors.

In other words the state a person has reached, and what they do to comfort themselves.

Alcoholics are in this group where alcohol becomes their teddy bear and comforter.

Alcohol in itself should be reasonably harmless but given a state a psychosis can lead to death.

It's like food. If one eats too much, obesity and heart attacks can happen. Attila the Hun died from eating.  And if one eats too little, bulimia and hunger can lead to death.

While mild quantities of wine before a meal can whet the appetite, imbibing excessive quantities of all manners of alcohol can aberrate judgment and draw out violent behavior, besides causing injury and death from drunk driving.  Alcohol in moderate quantities have been known to build sociability but again there is a price for everything if taken beyond personal limits.

All manners of addiction remove the seat of reasoning from the mind, replacing it with a craving that consumes all reality.

Even addictions to posting comments in forums and the like.  

The important things are to identify and avoid what is patently harmful in the long run, and to have the will and gumption to walk away from it before starting on the road to no return.

as for cannabis and addiction

Let's not be coy. It's dangerously addictive. It is typically mixed with tobacco, increasing all kinds of risks, and also in my opinion, dependence, by association. Typically, the stronger cannabis is sought, hydroponically grown under certain conditions, with certain strains selected, for maximum THC content. Highy dangerous.

If you work in this "field" for even a few days, meeting the affected, you will get all the "proof" you need

I can't tell you how many countless psychotic wasted lives I have seen, ruined by this substance, ending in death, psychiatric disability and even homicide.

And, no matter how many admissions for psychosis, no matter what the effect on the relationships and health, people keep smoking it. That's part of the definition of drug dependence.

Let's not try and "relativise" its destructive potential, thereby weakening (at least to some minds) any conclusion about its safety.

It otherwise, as a plant, has many useful purposes. Unfortunately, as Mark points out, this potential is marred by the potential to otherwise cultivate it by the potential to exploit such a situation for misuse.
