比较通常的用法,在一国之君之下的“子民”,叫做“subject ”。所以比较多见到的,有“British subject”,通常不会用“American subject”来形容美国公民。稍微有点儿“臣服”於较高权力者的含义。

在二战前希特拉纳粹期间,犹太人被贬为“subject of the state”,意喻person who did not qualify for full citizenship in Nazi Germany,地位在於纳粹德国公民之下。

我看了一个有关犹太人在战前德国的纪录片,太让人吃惊了,犹太人的人数只占德国总人口的几分之一,但医生和律师的数目竟超过60%。还有在商业等方面,犹太也占据着越来越大的优势,收入也比一般的德国人高许多。

跟我们以往认为的德国人是一个聪明的优秀民族的想法好像差距蛮大的。
