Well, let's make it 7 states and one Capital territory:
Northern Territory
Western Australia
South Australia
Queensland
New South Wales
Victoria
Tasmania

and the Capital Territory of

Canberra

This makes it either 7 plus 1 or eight.
...

Satsu, I think the Northern Territory is still not a fully fledged state.

Under the "Union flag" corner (which comprises the crosses of Saints Andrew, George and Patrick) of the Australian National flag, is the 7 pointed federation star. This star represents the 6 states and one point for the two territories. If and when the NT achieves conventional statehood then one would assume another point on the star !!

Let's not.
Ah, it's called Northern Territory so how can you call it a state?
And same with the ACT, as in T for territory.
But thanks for playing :)

My answers are taken from Wiki (Why don't you take it up with them and make the necessary corrections if you are right)

Thanks Emu,

I didn't know this. It is in a way similar to Canada, where the Yukon -, Northwest - and Nunavut territory are not (yet) considered to be provinces.
