ambrosia   n. (Ambrosia literally means “immortality” in Greek, and only immortals-gods and goddesses-could eat ambrosia in Greek and Roman mythology. Their drink was nectar.)
(1) food of the gods   神仙的食物   Ambrosia was supposed to give immortality to any human who ate it.   过去人们想象,任何人吃了仙果就可长生不死。   (2) something extremely pleasant to taste or smell   珍馐美味   To the hungry hikers, the simple stew tasted like ambrosia.    对那些徒步旅行者而言,这简简单单的炖的食物尝起来犹如珍馐美味。
【点评】 《中高级英语考试词汇捷径》的例证译自(1)Barron’s GRE 第14版;(2)Merriam-Webster’s Vocabulary Builder,更能体现ambrosia的涵义。一本好的辞书,应当兼收并蓄,荟萃世界众多一流的辞书的精华。
People today recognize the value of a solid and varied vocabulary. Innumerable studies in recent years show beyond a doubt that a strong vocabulary helps you do better in school, in business, and in the professions.  But I want to emphasize that there is little point in learning isolated words. The unit of language is not the word but the sentence.
