On election day, with nothing left to do but wait for results, Obama pollster Joel Benenson spoke with TIME's Amy Sullivan. The former reporter turned numbers man talked about how the Obama team developed its strategy for taking on John McCain, how Obama managed to sustain a consistent message for the duration of the race and why the Obama campaign resisted calls to aggressively woo Hillary Clinton voters. Here's Benenson's inside take on how Obama won:

这是一篇文章的第一段,主要是红色那句不懂,甚至不明白它的语法成分。本篇文章主要是讲奥巴马在战略上的一些优势。从“Here's Benenson's inside take on how Obama won:”这句总领全文句大家应该可以猜出点后面要讲什么了吧。

Let me break it down.....

"The former reporter" is Joel Benenson. He is Obama's pollster. This means he is the "numbers man". We can say a "numbers man" is a pollster.

Because he  (Joel Benenson) is dealing with information from the polls, he is dealing with numbers. Before he did this work with Obama's campaign, his previous (former) work was working as a reporter.

In English, we will use the term "numbers man" to mean the person who is good with math, or numbers in any sense. For example, in business, a manager might say "let me run this by our numbers man to see what he thinks", which would mean he would talk with the accountant to get his input.

A dog's tail...

'reporter turned numbers man' means the man was a reporter before but now has turned numbers man.

Normally, you do NOT say 'She was a spy who turned into a traitor and gave secret information to the enemy.'

You say 'She was a spy who turned traitor and gave secret information to the enemy.'

Where 'turned'='became'.
