Isn't freedom of speech wonderful.  It gives you the opportunity to stop other people speaking.  What a conundrum!

Taiwan crowd besieges China envoy.

Demonstrators have dispersed after surrounding a hotel in the Taiwanese capital to protest against a visit by a top-ranking Chinese negotiator.

Hundreds of protesters gathered at the hotel in Taipei where Chinese envoy Chen Yunlin was attending a dinner.
Mr Chen is reported to have left the hotel after a six-hour stand-off between demonstrators and police.
The demonstrators are opposed to President Ma Ying-jeou's policy of forging closer ties with China.

'Chinese bandit'

The BBC's Cindy Sui, who is at the scene, says vehicles with tinted windows leaving the hotel were spat and yelled at.
Some shouted "Ma Ying-jeou step down", blaming the Taiwanese president for allowing the landmark talks during Mr Chen's visit.
Lines of riot police prevented demonstrators from getting into the hotel.

Mr Chen is the most senior Chinese official to visit Taiwan in decades. The envoy is spending five days in Taiwan and has already signed agreements to improve direct trade and transport links between the two sides. He is due to meet President Ma on Thursday.
Protests.

Mass protests against President Ma's pro-China policies have been on going since August. They have been led by the main opposition, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which while in government antagonised Beijing with a pro-independence agenda.
Recent relations soured two months ago when Taiwan was affected by tainted milk products from China, and a number of people were taken ill.

China claims sovereignty over Taiwan though they have been separately governed since 1949.

The mobs are not pro-Taiwan. They're thugs. The victims are mostly Taiwanese. Faces of injured people on the frontpage of the papers are all Taiwanese.

It's a shame that these mobs and the DPP hides behind human rights and free speech to unleash its terror campaign.

In the end, they failed to derail the progress that brings Taiwan and the mainland together. What they did achieve however, is tainted Taiwan's image as a whole, destroyed all credibility for the party and made 1.3 billion compatriots on the mainland hate the DPP even more. Sheer stupidity and their ship is sinking faster than I could imagine.

We cannot put the total blame on them!

We know that it is the west (in particular, the Americans) that are stirring up trouble as usual!

Did you know that the TWNese don't really like Mainlanders and consider them backwards provincials? Did you know that they've never liked Mainlanders and there wasn't exactly a warm welcome for CKS? Did you know that TWNese actually expressed thanks that Japan ruled the island because it meant they didn't have to be part of the idiocy that is Mainland China?

You probably didn't.

What you said belongs to the past and it is part of history. About 10 - 15 years ago, this kind of sterotype has greatly dimished.
In China, pick any big city, their urbanisation such as infrastructors are either equal or beyond T'pei city.... In  terms of sustained and developed knowledge the mainland has  already exceeded tw  by far such as science, space, education, stem cells, construction, manufacture etc... thanks to openning up policy and learning from other countries....

TW people especially business and government knows it.

Please bring yourself back to 2008

No, White, it's quite current. Maybe you think not, but the TWNese I know agree with my assessment.
