Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk gestures as he speaks during a media conference on the hosting of a U.S. missile shield, in front of the Prime Minister Chancellery in Warsaw August 11, 2008. In July, Tusk rejected the latest U.S. offer to establish a missile shield in the country, saying Poland's security must be enhanced in return for hosting the shield, strongly opposed by Warsaw's former overlord Russia. Tusk said at the conference that this was even more the case in view of the fighting in South Ossetia between Russia and Georgia. REUTERS/Kacper Pempel (POLAND)

Indeed, this is only going to worsen the crisis between the U.S. and Russia. They may pull out of the intermediate missile restrictions, deploy weapons in Belarus and Kaliningrad, and they are basically certain to start actively backing Iran.

Not to mention the possibility of another Cuban missile crisis, this time with Venezuela supporting Cuba.

It is possible that Saakashvili was simply following orders from his masters in Washington when he seemingly lost his wits and attacked South Ossetia, and that the Polish P.M. was aware of this and played his part as well.

Dangerous games, indeed.
