一味随着大伙儿去糟蹋一些好人;

Preface to A Cadre School Life: Six Chapters

By Qian Zhongshu

       Having finished A Cadre School Life: Six Chapters, Yang Jiang sent me the script. I read it through and found that she’d forgot one chapter, which I’d like to be entitled Retrospective Guilt in the Campaign.

       Now, things are different. Truth has come to light, and the wronged have cleared their name. There      were three usual types of people in this campaign as in any previous one. If their memoirs were colleted,   titles would vary.

      Retrospective Unjust Treatment or Retrospective Indignation might be chosen by those who were wrongly accused or treated in the campaign; Retrospective Guilt mostly by the masses: some may regretfully confess being blind to “untrue” or “unjust” accusations and following suit to ruin the reputation of some innocent people. Some, like me, are ashamed of having a chicken heart. We, at the utmost, showed reluctance to take part in the campaign, but were not courageous enough to wage a protest against the obvious injustice.The third type of person persisted in serving as flag-wavers, drum-beaters, and “hit-men” in helping to “settle” case after case in the “kangaroo courts,” even though they knew full well that things were always messy and tangled-up, never clear-cut. These people should logically have the greatest need to write “A Record of Shame,” but quite likely they have no recollection of what they did and feel no remorse over it. They may have forgotten the past precisely because of a sense of shame, or because they are impervious to shame.

       Guilt causes forgetfulness. We tend to forget guilty or face-losing experiences, which hence easily slip out of our memory as if they never happened. Moreover, guilt pulls back or holds up our progress in the sharp competition of survival. Conscience-stricken people may draw back for a while and consequently lag behind for a lifetime. Therefore, Guilt should be eliminated rather than nurtured. In ancient classics, the commonly mentioned “Seven Human Emotions” didn’t count in “guilt”. In increasingly tense modern social life, such a psychological state bears no help at all. Instead, it does great harm. Better have no sense of guilt, and keep a joyful and light-hearted mood.

                                                                                                                                                                                                       From NoOdle's Blog

Retrospective Guilt in the campaign改成introspectional campaign, 如何?

But in fact, they may never take it to heart and always hold a clear conscience.
But in fact, they may neither take it to heart nor be conscious to their conscience.

Conscience-stricken people may draw back for a while or even lag behind for a lifetime.
Conscience-stricken people may even suffer a lifelong left-behind caused by a once temporary
lapse.

Better have no sense of guilt, and keep a relaxed and joyful mood.
Better have no sense of guilt,so as to keep a light-hearted and joyful mood.

nor be conscious to their conscience
