GUIYANG - A third postmortem examination confirmed that the girl whose controversial death sparked a violent protest in southwest China had drowned, upholding results of previous autopsies.

Guizhou provincial Communist Party chief Shi Zongyuan made the remarks at a conference on the protest on Thursday afternoon.

There were doubts on the cause of the girl's death on the Internet and among the media and public, which had caused complaints, Shi said.

He urged officials attending the conference to announce the factual details of the incident as investigation went on in a timely manner.

Five experts from the Guizhou Provincial Department of Public Security and the provincial Higher People's Court conducted the third postmortem on Wednesday, prior to the girl's burial.

Relatives of Li Shufen, 17, and many local residents in Weng'an County, contended she was raped and killed by individuals who had connections with local government and police officials.

However, officials told a press conference on Monday night there was no evidence the teenager had sexual intercourse before her death. In addition, the three people who last had contact with Li were from local villages and none had connections to officials.

China Police to Reopen Probe Into Death
China says police to reopen probe into teenager's death that caused riot
Chinese police will reopen an investigation into the death of a teenage girl after accusations of a cover-up led to rioting in this southwest China town, a state news agency reported Tuesday.
The widespread protests in Weng'an, a town in hilly Guizhou province, stemmed from the official report on the death of a high school student and allegations that one suspect was related to a local official, residents said.
Residents believe Li Shufen — whose body was pulled from a river June 22 — was raped and murdered. An initial police report found that the girl drowned, causing 30,000 people to swarm to the streets in anger Saturday, the official Xinhua News Agency said.Xinhua had quoted vice county chief Xiao Song as saying that a preliminary investigation found no links between children of local officials and the girl.
But Xinhua reported Tuesday that the investigation would be reopened.
"The provincial government has sent 10 criminal investigators and forensic experts to reinvestigate the death," it said.
The Hong Kong-based Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy said that in the original investigation, officials questioned three young men but let them go.
In the unrest, the local police building was set on fire and its windows were broken. By Tuesday, burned out cars had been removed from the front of the building, and parts of town were returning to normal, with residents shopping and walking around.
Security remained tight, with paramilitary police lining the streets.
Provincial Communist Party Secretary Shi Zongyuan visited the area to stress "the importance of social stability," Xinhua said."We must put maintaining social harmony and stability on the top of our agenda," Shi was quoted as saying. The provincial public security bureau said Tuesday that its chief was at a meeting and did not comment. The Weng'an Public Security Bureau lines rang busy.Authorities have rounded up 300 people accused of taking part in Saturday's riot, the Hong Kong rights group said. The unrest is especially sensitive for China ahead of the Beijing Olympics in August and officials have repeatedly stressed the need to keep order. President Hu Jintao and top security officials have issued important instructions for the case, according to the Guizhou Daily.
Riots and protests by local citizens over official corruption, land confiscation and a growing gap between the rich and poor have been an increasing problem for China's communist leaders in recent years.

Vital learning curve .

This episode demonstrated that the officials in Guiyang were responsible and correct , acting by the law . However it highlights too the urgent need for the Chinese public , especially in more remote areas , to be shown that their officials are upholders , rather than abusers , of the law . In situations like this , where there is public doubt , the need for outside teams of experts to be brought in , at the first sign of trouble , is vital .

With the passage of time and with repeated proof of trustworthiness , the public will come round . Any time corrupt officials do a under handed deal or a cover up , then the public will be alienated again . It is a learning curve the government must get right .

A massive cover-up has been attempted... again, and we will witness many more of this kind.

One of the "cover-up" is your no courage to open up the case of your country.

It is sad to read that one so young has died while protesting for, or against, what she believed in. I hope her parents are being comforted and that she finds peace wherever she is now. Such a tragic waste of a young life that could've been so promising.
