So... Augustus... your thesis is that no one wants to separate unless some very large power will sponsor them?
Answer: You mistand the point. if the power sponsors, the separatists will do this job. But that does not mean they are the representatives of their people. My idea of this does not help you draw a conclusion as above. Right? It's a simple logic.
How do you account for the separation of the US from Britain (it took years to find a European country willing to help out) or the separation of Latin America from Spain? What of the separation of Bangladesh from Pakistan, Czechl from Slovakia, the Philippines from the US, India from Britain, Scotland from unitary UK government, Canada from Britain, Singapore from Malaysia, Papua New Guinea from Australia, the Middle East from Britain and France? The Basques from Spain? What about the Chechens? The Baltic States? Ukraine?!
Answer: Since your above-mentioned rationale is not right. These quetions are not worth ansering. But I want to ask you why the United States wanted to separate from Britain? Why Latin America from Spain?...I am not sure if you know the answer, but i can tell you that's not simply because of nationalism. You can study hard on these questions first, and then I may help.
Here's my bet: you, like nearly everyone else in and most from China, has paid not a moment's attention to what goes on outside it at a detailed level. You've got no clue where these groups come from, how they form, what drives them or how you get them to compromise. That's why you, like other people here, keep trying to draw analogies with things which are not actually analogs. I admit, you're getting better--Corsica is a pretty good shot--but you're still very far off.
Answer: I know clearly Northern Ireland want to separate from Britain.
Why aren't you asking why the US doesn't support the Kurds or why Spain hasn't released the Basques? You want to know the reason you've never thought to ask? Here it is: because you do not care, even on an intellectual level concerned solely with whose claims would "win in court" with any of these groups or regions, you're just casting about for a bludgeon and doing a miserable job.
Do not forget the U. S. has already controlled Iraq.
