8 dead in nursing home shooting
A staff report

CARTHAGE — Eight people are dead and a police officer was injured after a gunman walked into a Moore County nursing home this morning and started shooting, authorities said.

The shooting happened about 10 a.m. at the Pinelake Health and Rehabilitation Center in Carthage, police said.

Six people were apparently dead at the scene and two died at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst, according to police and a spokeswoman at the hospital.

The shooter has been identified as Robert Stewart, 45, of Moore County.

He was taken to FirstHealth after the shooting, but it was unclear this evening whether he was at the hospital or in custody. During a 5 p.m. news conference, Sheriff Lane Carter said Stewart was in his custody.

He faces eight counts of murder and one count of felonious assault on a law enforcement officer, according to Moore County District Attorney Maureen Krueger.

Kreuger identified the residents who were killed as: Tessie Garner, 88; Lillian Dunn, 89; Jessie Musser, 88; Bessie Hendrick, 78; John Goldston, 78; Margaret Johnson, 89; and Louise Decker, 98.

Jerry Avent, a nurse, also was killed. His age was not available.

Krueger said Carthage police officer Justin Garner, 25, was injured, along with a visitor to the nursing home, 53-year-old Michael Cotton.

Carthage police Chief Chris McKenzie said he was still trying to absorb what had happened in his town today.

“I don’t know that the emotion has fully set in,’’ he said during the news conference.

Eight killed after shooting spree in nursing home in North Carolina!

A gunman killed at least eight people yesterday when he entered a North Carolina nursing home and began shooting residents.

Police in the small community of Carthage said a 45-year-old man burst into the home, which provides care for people with Alzheimer's disease, and shot seven patients and a nurse. The patients were aged between 78 and 98. Six were killed at the scene, while two others died later at a local hospital.

Police said there was no known motive for the shootings, and that the 45-year-old suspect, Robert Stewart, appeared to have no connection with the home. The alleged attacker was injured before being arrested by police at the 110-bed Pinelake health and rehabilitation centre on Sunday morning. A police officer was also injured but later released from hospital.

The condition of the alleged gunman was "currently unknown", according to Carthage police chief Chris McKenzie.

"This is a small community built on faith, and faith will get us through," McKenzie told a news conference. "It's a horrible event in any size town, particularly, though, when you deal with a small town such as Carthage. It's hard. This is my home, my small town. I was born and raised here so I take it to heart a little bit. All you can do is move forward."

It's an epidemic ...

Six killed, including children, in Memphis shooting

CNN) -- Six people were killed, including two children, and another three children wounded in a shooting Monday in Memphis, Tennessee, authorities said.

Police and fire units responded Monday after six people were killed in Memphis, Tennessee.

Memphis Fire Department spokeswoman Melanie Young said firefighters responded to a 911 call at a home at 6:11 p.m. Monday when the bodies and wounded children were found.

The wounded children -- a 7-year-old boy, a 10-month-old girl and a 4-year-old whose gender wasn't immediately known -- were transported to Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center.

They were in the emergency room being treated for gunshot wounds, said hospital spokeswoman Jennilyn Utkov.

The Commercial Appeal newspaper that one child was upgraded to stable condition late Monday, another was upgraded to critical and the third was still in extremely critical condition.

"We just don't know the motive or cause of death, but we do have four adults and two children [dead]," Memphis police Lt. Jerry Guin told the paper.

Rob Robinson told the Commercial Appeal that he was the landlord for the brick, single-family house that rented for $550 per month.

"They were very nice, very polite to me," Robinson told the paper of the residents.

"It's kind of surprising, actually. I've never had any trouble with them, no damage to the property. They paid their rent and even helped with repairs and stuff."

Neighbor Leo Baker told CNN affiliate WMC-TV he has lived nearby for 10 years but did not know the residents of the home.

"It's sad you come home to find out something like this has gone on," Baker said. "It's kind of sad, and scary, too."

Video footage showed emergency vehicles on the scene, with people embracing in rainy weather outside police tape surrounding the home.

"I've been on a scene where there were one or two or three [victims], but I don't remember anything this large," Guin told the Commercial Appeal.

The newspaper reported that the shooting appeared to be the city's deadliest mass killing since 1973, when 28-year-old David Sanders randomly shot and killed five people before being shot dead by police.

In 2000, police said firefighter Frederick Williams confessed to a shooting in Memphis in which four people were killed -- his wife, a sheriff's deputy and two fellow firefighters.

Boy, 9, shot while riding bicycle in Little Village

March 27, 2009

Chicago police were scouring the Little Village neighborhood Friday for witnesses to a Thursday evening shooting of a 9-year-old boy who was riding his bicycle.

The boy was riding his bike about 6 p.m. near the intersection of South Hamlin Avenue and West 30th Street as his mother and 6-year-old brother walked behind him, police said. As he stopped at the intersection to wait for his family before crossing the street, he was shot.
"He ran back to his mom and had a bullet in his arm," a law enforcement source said. "She's a mess. So is the boy."

The boy was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the upper arm, Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford said. Police said Friday morning the boy was in good condition.

Harrison Area detectives are investigating, but nobody was in custody early Friday.,w-boy-shot-little-village-9-bike-032709.article
