Divine accident is good, although the conept per se flies in the face of logic---- Is it accidental(accident), or providential (divine) and thus inevitable? Likewise, everythin ...

"We know it's very hard to translate some isolated phrases without sufficient context. This is also true in translating "yuanfen". According to Buddhist philosophies, "yuan" was already formed during one's previous life. What you enjoy or connect to now is the result of your "doings" in your previous life. You cannot escape "yuan" but  you can "build it up" during your current life, so that you have a very good "yuanfen" in your next life. (Buddhism preaches reincarnation)"

The Yuan you mean here is Karma, that is Purity(25 types) & Defilements(14 types)......

Human are born with lots of Purity & a little defilements....

Next level, Animals have thicker defilements.......

When one talks of building it up, one do good deeds, reflects on the 25 types of Purity like main is Benevolence, Sympathetic Charity,etc......so that the Evolution current gets Purified!!! When it is 100% purity, Nirvana is achieved....

The main defilements are Greed,Hatred&Ignorance(Stupidity).............
What's on your mind now........ooooooooooooooo la la....Kind Regards

讨论的真热烈. 俺的翻译和你们有所不同.
缘分: divine accident

缘分本来就是一种巧合, 天意使然.  这个不是俺的杜撰, 是有据可查的.

This one is good. Thanks.

Simply study the phrase "Divine Accident".
Then can you raise a single example to prove "Divine Accident" is not the right English version of "yuanfen"?
Raise an example. Any one?

I agree you can use different words to describe different settings. But divine accident and yuanfen look like twins. Perhaps that is yuanfen, that is divine accident. How interesting! ;)

you know yuanfen and the DA belong to different language.
You can not use the grammer of one language to limit another.
What mean here is their meaning. As twins, they have different ID certainly.

you know yuanfen and the DA belong to different language.

And they certainly belong to different cultures, too. That's the very reason why it is so hard to find an "equivalent" in the target language to "fit it any possible context". I doubt any prudent translator would ever do that.

Ok, to answer your question, let me give a context in which your "divine accident" certainly doesn't fit. To begin with, here are two strangers (not necessarily of the opposite sexes) meeting each other for the first time and they "hit it off". So much so that they actually talk about everything like old friends would do. In this case, we chinese would say 他们谈得真投缘啊!I don't think "Divine" would have anything to do with this conversation. Do you know why? Because when people use the word "yuan" in this context, the Bddhist suggestion is curtailed to a great extent. In other words, "yuan" has been "secularized".

And how do you translate the following: 我这个人健康意识比较强,烟酒跟我是没有缘分的了。
And: 缘可以储存,可以续,也可以尽。
Of course you have heard about : 让我们再续前缘吧!
For yong lovebirds: 缘来缘去都是爱。缘来缘去都是梦。
Business:我想去做一份缘分测试。
Sunnan's lyrics: 这片缘分天空,是我为你织的一个梦!
