Mock drowning, hypothermia, "outsourcing" torture to other countries ...

These techniques are not only shameful, they also do not work.

Torture is unreliable, it undermines values, and it hardens hearts and minds against the US.

Torture is never the answer.

Will the US end torture?

Either you are for human rights or you are against it.

Torture is nothing less than barbaric. Its usage is inhumane. Those who think the end justifies the means should also know that it has been shown to be ineffective. Torture is wrong and there are absolutely no circumstances that make it right. At the most minimum, torture is illegal.

As soon as the US engaged in torture, they lost. One can never do good by doing evil.

When they engage in illegal actions, it spits in the face of their Constitution, the very thing that their country and ideals are supposedly based on.

Sure, it's not hard, it only takes an executive order. There are powerful incentives to use torture because it is perceived as a signal that the executive "has done everything possible". As Americans feel safer, they will no longer see torture as justifiable. It's simply a matter of time.

So are you saying that Americans see torture as justifiable?

Most people see torture as justifiable in so-called "ticking bomb" scenarios; the administration, in order to get support for the war in Iraq and numerous onerous law enforcement provisions, ginned up precisely this fear, making torture seem justifiable. Of course, it's now well known that there was no such threat and that torture is more widely used than high-level people in high threat situations; it's just a matter of time before the last people settle down and then turn in their pride.
