Last night I watched the movie "Lust and Caution".  The story was really a tragedy. The young students were hot-blooded but a little childish. However, they should not be criticized, because they died for their country. Uncountable people died for the liberation of our motherland, so our motherland could survive. I am listening the song "the Ode of Moral Integrity" written by Wen Tianxiang, and recollecting the heroic people of our nation. Let's express less criticism and complaint but do more helpful things for improving our dear nation.

I Think Lee Ang is the Tragedy

Mr. Lee cannot make up his mind who he is.  L&C is a direct insult on the historical bravery of the Chinese resistance to Japanese invasion.

Can you imagine a Jewish director (there are not a shortage of those, mind you) making an absurd movie that goes thus:  A pretty Jewish princess decides to use her body (mind you, not a gun or a knife, but her body) to trap a Nazi spymaster who routinely tortures and murders Jews, and enjoys retelling the gristly details sadistically to the girl while he beds her.  Then the Jewess eventually falls for the monster; and when the professional  torturer buys her a big diamond ring, she tells him to run and thus escape assassination.

Imagine that!!  Now imagine instead of shooting this story in Shanghai, have Lee Ang shout this as a Jewish story.  What do you think will happen to his career in Hollywood?  Would L+C be lined up for Academy Awards??!!

Not only does he insult the intelligence of the Chinese people, he is also putting into question the bravery and judgment of the Chinese resistance against Japanese invasion, and against despicable quislings.

Zhang, Yimou was faulted for exposing too many scars.  But at least the scars are real, if exaggerated.  Lee Ang went miles ahead of him, and created absurdities to insult the image of Chinese fighters of invaders and related quislings.

In fact, at the time of war, many hot-blooded young students had no experience against the enemies, so sometimes what they did was a little childish. They paid the ultimate price-their lives. What we can see from this movie was the historical lesson written in blood, but not other things.
Anyway, they died for their motherland! They were memorable.

The Way They Died in the Movie Was Most "Wo Nang"

What is so uplifting or heroic about dying because your teammate decided to protect the head quisling instead of her resistance comrades?

Again, as a Chinese, I truly cannot understand what motivated Mr. Lee to pick this particular story, which insults the Chinese people, by exaggerating the boundless power and luck of the head quisling.

Lee Ang's L+C is the Mirror Image

Lee Ang's L+C is, in a sense, a mirror image exact opposite of the '50s "Yang Ban Xi" , like the Red Women's Brigade (Hong Se Neng Zhi Jun).  So at the end, evil wins.

This movie is the biggest failure by Lee so far.  It is a good thing it bores the gweilos, so there is no widespread distribution.  Most Chinese go see it only for the soft porn S&M content.  To move the DVDs (since the box office has been rather terrible overseas), it is likely that the porn segments will be "uncut" and of much longer length.

Not every one was full of power and grandeur, and not every one was unfearing. Many of people tried to do what they thought they should do. But because of their shortcomings, they could not achieve their goals and even they paid the ultimate price. However, they died for their country, not other thing. They were still herioc.
As for Wang Jiazhi, the young lady, she should not be censured. An ordinary person is easy to be controlled by a momentary slip. A emotional person is easy to be guided by feeling...

You should see the Dutch movie "Black book", which has some parallels to your suggestion.
One of the things it showed, the difference between 'good and bad' (people) is sometimes not as obvious as expected.
I didn't see L+C, have no opinion about it.
