Shall we dance?

Could you image? A middle age Japanese salaryman goes to work before the break of dawn and comes home after the night falling every working day, one night while he was standing at  the train station and waiting for the next train, a female figure leaning on the window on the top floor of a tall building near the station caught his eyes.

His curiosity drew him to find out that the girl was a dancing coach in a dancing club, he went ahead to sigh up the dancing lesson ... ...

One of the funniest and bitter-sweetest comedies I have ever seen.

Shall we dance?

A Hollywood version which was trying to catch the fun part of it, but failed ...

Maybe, the copycat is doomed to fail.

The Knot (2006) (Yun Shui Yao)

Two young souls - Chen Qiushui and Wang Biyun - fell in love. Chen Qiushui was a leftist, who fled Taiwan after the 228 Massacre.  Biyun gave him a gold engagement ring and they promised to meet again. Qiushui served as an army doctor during the Korean War and changed his name to Xu Qiuyun due to some political reasons.  (Xu was her mother's surname and yun was part of his girl friend's name) Qiushui and Biyun continued to look for each other's whereabouts, but it's in vain.  Later Chen Qiushui married a lovely nurse just like Biyun who fell in love with him at first sight. Years passed and now Biyun was living in Los Angeles. Her adopted daughter traveled to Tibet to retrace Qiushui's footsteps and through the pictures she sent back via the Internet, Biyun saw Qiushui's final resting place...

Tess of D'Urbervilles

by Thomas Hardy

Although the endings of Thomas Hardy's novels are tragic, there are many happy moments as the stories are unfolding. The author's prose is lyrical and poetic, vivid and descriptive, like paintings with rich colors and lights and shadows, especially those pictures and scenes of the rural areas in England, which is the trademark of  Thomas Hardy's works, as he is a poet as well as a novelist.

The films converted from Thomas Hardy's original novels also tried to recapture those beautiful, unspoiled landscapes.

I would skip the introduction to his novels because they are classical and well known and timeless.
