Markwu,

Interesting papers, but I do see at least a showdown between Shanghai and Hong Kong for the attention of government funding coming out of Beijing.

I actually envision something bigger than bipolarity between Shanghai and Hong Kong for the mantle - instead of geographic location of something which is in effect electronic in nature, why not have Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Wuhan, Zhengzhou, Shenyang etc. etc become financial nodes for a national network of exchanges, hubs, banking fraternties (retail, investment, private), insurers, financial instrument modellers etc, each of which again operating under a national framework but interfacing directly with the rest of the world?!

The key limitations are of course expertise and demand; the rest are just the mechanics of piping into the international financial community.

In fact, i would go further and say such a model of leveraging on China's economies-of-scale can be applied to other enterprises as well, not necessarily finance.  With apology to Chicago's grain mercantilists, perhaps even the international grainery commodity market.

Something to think about - and yes, i am still inching to that big thing: China's human capital.

If you are the poltiburo...

... you do think of things like this.  Socialistic government requires good social planning.  Distribution of the powers and responsibilites plays into the decisions going into Shanghai and Hong Kong right now by Beijing.

You'll still eventually get a few pinnacle cities.....

The rest would just be the funnels....towards the peak trading or financial cities.
Would IT, internet really replace "face to face" communication?
If that would be so, then it'll still be the "bulk of the wealthy" with investible funds, assets.
and it would still favour the supercentre?

go figure!
