US is adding tariff on import of glossy paper from China.  Europe is adding tariff on shoes.   It’s interesting to see how WTO unfolds with China opening up its market and others closing.

But it could very well be beneficial to China.  Less production means less pollution (paper and leather shoe production are major pollution causing industries), and at the same time, slow down the process of opening up China’s domestic financial markets for aggressive foreign competition.  .

After all, what we need is to develop our own domestic market.  As Mao said (sorry, in time like that, we need a bit his Hunan temper), we’ve to rely more on ourselves.

Europe's been threatening tariffs on shoes for years, and they've always said the (mainly Italian) shoemakers have generations of experience using the finest quality leather and workmanship that can only be learned over generations etc etc and that if the (mainly Italian) European shoe industry were to disappear (because it's more expensive than imports) these skills would be forever lost.

The U.S government a crapping their pants at the moment over China.

China pays their credit card bill with it's huge cash reserves.

Now, imagine if China suddenly moved all those cash reserve ...

There'd be a hell of a lot of un-wanted dollars around and the cost of dollars would fall like a piano!

Coming to a head

(Cross-posted)

Election is coming up in USofA and China should prepare for worse to come. The EU and USofA have been sparring over subsidies in the steel and aerospace industries and will continue to do so, China should expect no less.

USofA is China's single biggest customer.

I have said many times that China is too dependent on exports of low-tech, low-margin and high-volumn goods to the USofA. To overcome this dependency, China needs to create an internal circular demand. It is not as if China is in a position to retaliate other than to protest and to sue at WTO, both would be empty gestures.

Maybe it is good thing that it will come to a boil sooner or later. I wonder whether China will be prepared for it.
