"Sweet Betsy From Pike": Non-Heroic Love (c.1850)

Sweet Betsy from Pike

Did you ever hear tell of Sweet Betsy from Pike,
Who crossed the wide prairies with her lover Ike,
Two yoke of cattle, a large yeller dog,
A tall Shanghai rooster, and one spotted hog.

    Singing too-ra-li-oo-ra-li-oo-ra-li-ay.

They swam the wide rivers and crossed the tall peaks,
And camped on the prairie for weeks upon weeks.
Starvation and cholera, hard work and slaughter--
They reached California 'spite of hell and high water.

One evening quite early they camped on the Platte,
Twas near by the road on a green shady flat.
Betsy, sore-footed, lay down to repose--
With wonder Ike gazed on that Pike County rose.

The Injuns came down in a thundering horde,
And Betsy was scared they would scalp her adored.
So under the wagon-bed Betsy did crawl
And she fought off the Injuns with musket and ball.

The alkali desert was burning and bare,
And Isaac's soul shrank from the death that lurked there.
"Dear old Pike County, I'll go back to you"--
Says Betsy, "You'll go by yourself if you do!"

They soon reached the desert, where Betsy gave out,
And down in the sand she lay rolling about.
Ike in great wonder looked on in surprise,
Saying, "Betsy, get up, you'll get sand in your eyes."

Sweet Betsy got up in a great deal of pain.
She declared she'd go back to Pike County again.
Ike gave a sigh, and they fondly embraced,
And they traveled along with his arm round her waist.

The Shanghai ran off, and the cattle all died,
That morning the last piece of bacon was fried.
Ike got discouraged, Betsy got mad,
The dog drooped his tail and looked wonderfully sad.

One morning they stopped on a very high hill,
With wonder looked down upon old Placerville.
Ike said to Betsy, as he cast his eyes down,
"Sweet Betsy, my darling, we've got to Hangtown."

Long Ike and Sweet Betsy attended a dance.
Ike wore a pair of his Pike County pants.
Betsy was covered with ribbons and rings.
Says Ike, "You're an angel, but where is your wings?"

This Pike County couple got married, of course,
But Ike became jealous, and obtained a divorce.
Betsy, well-satisfied, said with a shout,
"Goodby, you big lummox, I'm glad you backed out!"

The Other Side

Here is a poem by Robert Graves, published around 1920, that talks about the other side of the coin
.
"Graves wrote "one Hard Look" in the months following his il-fated marriage to Nancy Nicholson, which was for Graves a peiod of profound disillusionment." - a comment about this poem in "Poem for the Day" Volume II   (an anthology of 365 poems)

One Hard Look

Small gnats that fly
In hot July
And lodge in sleeping ears,
Can rouse therein
A trumpet's din
With Day of Judgement fears.

Small mice at night
Can wake more fright
Than lions at midday:
A straw will crack
The camel's back-
There is no easeir way.

One smile relieves
A heart that grieves
Though deadly sad it be
And one hard look
Can close the book
That lovers love to see.

I Know Why (And So Do You)

Why do robins sing in December?
Long before the Springtime is due?
And even though it's snowing, violets are growing,
I Know Why and so do you.
Why do breezes sigh ev'ry ev'ning,
whispering your name as they do?
And why have I the feeling stars are on my ceiling?
I Know Why and so do you.
When you smile at me,
I hear gypsy violins;
When you dance with me,
I'm in heaven when the music begins.
I can see the sun when it's raining,
hiding ev'ry cloud from my view;
And why do I see rainbows when you're in my arms?
I Know Why and so do you,
I Know Why and so do you                 (from "Sun Valley Serenade" [1941]; Mack Gordon lyrics,Harry Warren, music;played by Glenn Miller Orchestra)

comment on above

How would Robert Graves like being paired with Mack Gordon ,who was 1) an Americano,2) a Ukrainian Jew, and 3) a popular song lyricist? Not much,I guess (an americanism!).

People Will Say We're In Love

Oklahoma Lyrics

People Will Say We're in Love

Laurey:
Why do they think up stories that link my name with yours?

Curly:
Why do the neighbors gossip all day behind their doors?

Laurey:
I know a way to prove what they say is quite untrue
Here is the gist,
A practical list of "don'ts" fer you.
Don't throw bouquets at me
Don't please my folks too much
Don't laugh at my jokes too much.
People will say we're in love.

Curly:
Laugh at your jokes-

Laurey:
Don't sigh and gaze at me.
Your sighs are so like mine.
Your eyes mustn't glow like mine
People will say we're in love!
Don't start collecting things
Give me my rose and my glove.
Sweetheart, they're suspecting things
People will say we're in love.

Curly:
Some people claim that you are to blame as much as I
Why do you take the trouble to bake my fav'rite pie?
Grantin' your wish I carved our initials on that tree,
Just keep a slice of all the advice you give so free.
Don't praise my charm too much
Don't look so vain with me
Don't stand in the rain with me
People will say we're in love.

Don't take my arm to much
Don't keep your hand in mine
Your hand feels so grand in mine
People will say we're in love!
Don't dance all night with me
'till the stars fade from above
They'll see it's alright with me
People will say we're in love!

"People Will Say We're in Love"
