It probably means this

There are two expressions that sound like this The first one is used more often:

1. I'm on the phone.
2. Hang on the phone.

1. This is what you tell a person who wants to talk to you, but you are already using the telephone and talking to another person.

2. If you are talking to a person on the telephone, and they must go away for a minute, they may tell you this so you will wait until they return. They do not want you to hang up (disconnect) the phone.

Another possibility, a bit different: maybe it was "keep an eye on the phone" -- listen for it to ring, someone important is expected to call!

Yes, I didn't think of "keep an eye on the phone"
