Lofty motto!

静坐常思己过,闲谈莫论人非。

More self-accusation, less accusation;
No gossips but small talks.

good point!

静坐常思己过,闲谈莫论人非。
repenting my sins instead of criticising

it was a liberal translation intended not for bilinguists but for those who read only english and live in a society of different culture.

comments added:
>>self-examine one's own miss when alone; gossip none's fault when in company.

a typical chinese style of faithfulness: redundancy and misuse of words:
self-examine (what?)
miss (misconduct?)
gossip one's fault (commenting on one's fault, or just gossiping?)
the sentence reads awkward and makes me scratching head.

>>Habitual reflection and prudent commentation

better wording but still sounds chinese. more, the logical connections between the two clauses are lost. the two clauses should read as one actually.
