China's recent friendly gestures towards Taiwan are a wise move, which not only left DPP's Chen in a difficult position, but also showed the world, especially America and Japan, that China intends no harm for the Taiwanese people as long as their ruling authority gives up the push for independence.

China's support for the direct flights during the Spring Festival and the decision to send two delegates to attend Koo's funeral demonstrated China's good will towards the Taiwanese people. On the other hand, the consistent hardline against the splittists in Taiwan makes it clear that Chen's pursue towards independence is currently the only threat against peace and prosperity. As medium sized private businesses which have large investments in China are the backbone of Taiwan's economy, Chen's pursue for independence will only harm the island's vibrant economy, which is ever more dependent on China's demand and production.

This year seems to have a good start as far as cross-straight relation is concerned. I hope that Chen does not make any further provocative move and refrains from any splittist activity. I hope the people and government in Taiwan will really cherrish this prosperity that they currently enjoy and work to resolve the cross-straight differences. I believe that the problems can only be solved bilaterally and that this year may just well be the year that the two sides reach some sort of agreement, or conditions for unification.

Chen won't stay quiet

He'll do a lot of talking. In fact, China will find that he's very eager to talk about resolving problems. Chen might be pro-independence, but recently it has been China that has refused to talk - basically because they were throwing a temper-tantrum about having to talk to him. Perhaps they were also worried about giving him credibility.

But not talking makes him more popular. So, hopefully, they'll talk to him and the two will resolve their differences peacefully.
