Maybe it will not be something the Chinese government can choose, but instead something which is forced upon her through a lack of resources. As the Chinese economy continues to grow, bicycles will be replaced by motorbikes and cars, heating and air-conditioning will become more widespread, and consumables more affordable.

The powers-that-be have already stated they want a stronger domestic demand for goods, so what happens when 1.3 people demand their fair share?

In my view, it's about the time to loose a bit, maybe restrict to two kids per family.  In a modern society, it's so easy to lose a child due to accidents.  The lost of your loved one is unbearable to anyone, especially if that is your only kid.

The society gets wealthier, lesser of our desire have more kids.  This happens to most of the developed countries.  I believe having two instead of one won't significantly effect the population especially among the urbanites.

In fact, I have heard the government has started doing so.  Now a marriage from two families with single child is allowed to have two kids.

things are changing

every nation has a history, one differ from another. each one has some bad ideas. it is indeed absurd that chinese people consider boys much more important than girsl. however, after dozens of years of open, such instances declind in a large number.

Hi, don’t think it's the Chinese phenomena.  Almost every culture prefers boy.  In North American culture, it was used to passing on Cigar if having a baby boy and only chocolates for a baby girl. It's only in the modern time; we all realized having a girl can actually be better than having a boy.

She is rights

It seems from your tone, that there is not equality between men and women in China. I may be wrong, but it seems the wives will be with their man through good times and bad.
Anyway, ,that was not my question. .Why not be allowed to have one child, but if it is a girl, then you have a girl. If you have a boy, then you have a boy. After the one child the tubes can be tied or the man can get sniped. .Why is it legal to kill of a girl to get a boy? Does this not seem cruel to you?

Hahaha...  do you have any idea what China is?  She is not a barbaric state, and it is never legal to kill baby girls in this country.    People living in the city actually prefer to have girls than boys.   Rural peasants may have been somewhat different due to backwardness, but killing is never allowed.
