let them leave...

If China's so worried about their "overpopulation" why dont they let the people who want to leave China leave? they could go to less populated places, or places that need/ want more people.....like France or here...there's plenty of land, food and work.....

Also, everyone is assuming that all poor people start out poor....that is not true. Some start out well-to-do, with more than one child ( because they can afford it ), but later in their lives something bad happens and they become poor. What then?

It is never good to mess with the natural cycle of life. It will always balance itself in the end. Too many people ( if there really is such a thing ) will be balanced by the death of those who die from accidents, disease, war, or famine. Not because there is not enough food in this world, because there IS actually a surplus, but because no one wants to incur the cost of purchacing it and geting it to the needy. The real "scourge" of the world is the greedy, apathetic, racist, immoral, western culture of death which is driven by its corporations. They would rather burn or throw away what they can't sell than give it away to someone who could use it.  China should have never embraced any of the west's social culture.

I guess your rather optimistic thesis will be put to the test rather soon anaconda, as many parts of the world heads towards overpopulation, and the results won't be pretty. It's true there is enough food to feed everybody today, but that doesn't meen there can't be to many people on this planet. Besides humans crave more than just food, and that taken to account we're too many already. Although china's policy is very strict, and a limit at two children might be better due to those natural losses, i think the policy is both wise and necessary in one way or another.

I also must question your ethics as you say those who might be redundant will die from  either war, decease or famin anyway so no problem, as if... What kind of life is that for those exess children anyway. We humans have, at least some of us have the gift of understanding the effects of the present and thus project possible future outcomes, and then to not do anyting about them? It's nothing natural about it...

girl ~~~~

I BELIEVE that one child policy will take result in gender imbalance
Some people are cruel to abort their babies who are certificated as female.......
The reason for question you raise in your article is that  most people are cultivated  with YUJIA  method,so they respect their parents , On the contrary, only boys represent the Power , so people prefer boys to girls.................

One Chil Policy

Since joining the website, I’m learning very much about Chinese thinking and concerns. I am an African-American and I don’t pretend to know China like those of Chinese descent. I’m just here to offer my opinions and learn more about China. When in college I took a course in Chinese history so I know China has come a long way and has a long way to go. I'm very impressed by the wide variety of issues and the deep concern Chinese citizen have for their country current situations and it's future.

In regard to the one child policy in China, I think it’s a good policy for China, but the way it is implemented and administered need to be adjusted to take into consideration the various situations of individual citizen couples. I don’t think the policy should be applied equally to everyone.

One problem created by the one child policy is the devaluing of female life where couple have abortions to get rid of their female child, because they want male child. Somewhere in read couple want male child to carry on the family name and in another place I read they want male child so he can take care of them in old age. I think the solution to both these desires (carry on name and take care of old parents) is that women needs more rights. These rights would include equality in pay in employment, and perhaps more controversial, when women marry, they keep their family name but also take their husband’s name. So if a woman’s name is Ling Zhou and she marry a man with family name Wu, then her name become Ling Zhou Wu. Many women in the west do this to maintain their family name, but this can only happen as women are treated as equal to men.

However, I really think the problems with population is not limited to China. The problems with population is not just over population, but with imbalanced populations (in terms of age, gender, economics, birth rate and death rate due to disease and hunger). Some populations taking far more of their share of world resources and producing far more than there fair share of waste. Also there is the problem of ownership and under use of some land. If corporations would do right, they could create irrigation of some desert areas to produce more livable and agriculture land. Better efforts would be made to recycle waste. Also citizens everywhere would be educated on world and their own county’s population, waste, recycle and other efforts.

In addition, I think too many big corporations take short cuts to profits and create too much pollution while developing the things use by modern societies. The population in the U.S.A is only 5% of world population but use about 25 to 30 % of world resources and create about 30% or the world’s waste. See this web site for population figures: http://www.xist.org/earth/his_proj_continent.aspx

So, I think the one child policy is a good idea for China, but need to be implemented in a more creative way so it don’t adversely affect the balance of boys to girls. But along with the one child policy a system for caring for elderly parents need to be created or made stronger. One child can’t care for two elderly parent and their own child or children. And I think a more world wide comprehensive population analysis need to be done, including recognizing all the associated problems and then come up with solutions that are best for each country or areas within a country to overcome all the imbalances I cited above.

I reckon it`s a traditional value of chinese people

In rural areas, people need boys to manage their property and  inherit their property.
the reason is that male can do more and better farm work than female due to their stonger
body.it seems to be a biological question, however it belongs to society.Developing is needed
by our society. The faster you develop, the easier you can survive form intense competition about resouces.
As china is the oldest and typical rural country in the ancient time.So it`s easy to comprehend why boys
weigh a more important role than girls.
The theory you provide such as women produce next generation oringinates from maternal society.
This mode of society are less developed than paternal society attested by reality.
Women don`t spark wars because of their rightless social caste. They don`t have such right to depoly the
nations` armament. Can you see any female mandator around Hitler?
That all because of the development of society.
Not compete with others,
thus you can beat the world
