Johnson & Johnson has decided to stop selling skin-whitening creams popular in Asia and the Middle East, after such products have come under renewed social pressure in recent weeks amid a global debate about racial inequality.

The company will stop selling its Clean & Clear fairness line of products, sold in India, a spokeswoman told Reuters. It was reported earlier this month that it would drop its Neutrogena Fine Fairness line, available in Asia and the Middle East.

Reactions to Johnson & Johnson’s decision on social media ranged from the incredulous to the supportive. “Pure racism and sexism towards Asian women. Our rights as [an] ethnic minority are being infringed [upon],” wrote a commenter based in Hong Kong.

“Her body her choice,” wrote a social media user on Twitter, while another said: “A disgrace. If people want to buy them, they have a right to do it.”

It's Asian women's foolish choice if they want to have an unhealthy paleface look.  But it smells racist when those with normal skin color are criticized being 'dark'.

News to me, Indians and Middle eastern women also like to be fair.  I thought only Chinese, Japanese n Korean women have this obsession.  Chinese women spend a lot on products that would make them look fair, on those  "meibai" produts!  J & J is losing a huge market!  Good for the local companies to fill the vacuum!

Can't blame it on the women, Asian men are partly responsible for that, by their demand for their girlfriends to have fair complexion!  Asian men are fueling the demand for fairness products!

This belief stems from the notion that poorer people work outdoors as farmers and are thus susceptible to browner skin from suntanning. They have a lower social status than those who don't have to do such manual labour. Thus, the whiter the skin, supposedly the more beautiful and desirable the woman is. Many women still try to block off the sun with their umbrellas during the summer to remain pallid.
