The facial data of individuals is for sale online in packages, and one can easily buy the facial information of over 5,000 people at the cost of 10 yuan ($1.4). People's Daily comments:

The selling of facial information might have serious consequences. Facial information is as important as fingerprints and ID cards, and many people link their facial information with payment apps or other software associated with their property and other rights. Should one's facial information be sold or leaked, it might be used for illegal purposes such as theft.

It is necessary to break the illegal chain of selling people's facial information. Who collected the facial information of different people? How has the information reached the online sellers? Who would like to buy the information and where will they use it?

All these questions need answers, and responsible departments need to conduct investigations.

Some software and apps have long been blamed for collecting people's facial information at will. For example, some online games even require their users to log in via facial recognition, too, which might not be necessary. A legal permit should be a must for collecting facial information and issuance of such permit must be strictly controlled.

For the companies that can legally acquire user's facial information via smartphone apps, there is the responsibility of protecting and preserving the information well. In case someone's facial information gets leaked, the company that collects it should be held responsible.

Of course, that is not to blame facial recognition as a technology. In terms of public services, facial recognition has proved quite effective. For example, some senior residents can get their pensions via facial recognition, thus saving a trip to the social security office. Some passengers can enter high-speed railway stations and get on trains via facial recognition, thus saving the trouble of checking tickets. Facial recognition does bring people more convenience.

However, it is necessary to be aware of the risks, too, and prevent facial recognition technology from being abused. That in turn requires joint efforts from all parties involved. Smartphone users need to know the importance of their facial information, and say "no" to the apps that collect their facial information at will. More importantly, judicial agencies and law enforcers need to do their jobs better by punishing those who violate people's rights to their own facial information.

Reckon Facial Technologies must only be used by government departments because public involvements as users and providers will be out of control, absolutely beyond all doubts. Malicious users and providers are out to make money, especially in a very fast growing user population / database of China. With billion in number, it is so easy to fool and deceive unsuspecting innocent folks. For example the seriousness  ( of much simpler technology ) in telephony frauds and scam cases each month are increasing and the continual arrests of fraudsters are endless within China and the Asian region alone is already a policing nightmare. Sign into law that offenders will be imprisoned for a minimum of 2 years jail plus heavy fines.

How do governments manage and supervise such powerful hi-tech tool which can be as  malicious as virus infected software, malware, etc.....etc...etc which will tend to attack ( as in more powerful blackmailing, frauds and scams ) ?  HK crisis is one best example to illustrate the actual dangers once it gets into the dark hands of terrorists and/or rioters and/or supporters. Hence, only innocent folks and businesses shall suffer!

NEVER PERMIT PRIVATE AND PUBLIC ACCESS TO THE USE OF FACIAL TECHNOLOGY IS THE WARNING KEY EXPRESSION.

Obviously if these frauds abound yet are also illegal / not permitted, there is absolutely nothing to stop the same thing happening with digital face recognition. This could also easily infiltrate the records held by government departments.

Facial recognition hi-tech tool is most effective and appropriate to use in border checking points ( Custom Ports - all ports )  since China's provinces have promoted free visa-entry ( 48 hours up to 96 hours ) schemes although pre-applied entry-visa(s) are not to be exempted from face scanning. The other group of entries are citizens and special residents ( of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan ) as well Chinese citizens / permanent residents using e-passport entry.

Elders above 65 year old have mostly lost their finger-coded-prints due to old age and "wear & tear" or the finger-printing tool at checkpoints is backward or not sophisticated enough. So, facial recognition tool should replace elders' finger scanning. Scenarios had been witnessed often in checkpoints of China where elder folks and custom officers argued while others had to wait for many minutes until they cleared up. Poor showings at the most important spots where visitors of all nationalities could be watching amusingly, especially those first time visitors / tourists, about China !

However, that's nobody is above the law and needs to be face scanned.
