Joshua Wong is running for office.
Chris Lonsdale says that those protesters who are holding up the US as the best example of a government to emulate need a reality check
Over the last few weeks of protests in Hong Kong, we have seen a phenomenon that truly should make any sane Hong Kong person quake in their boots. I'm talking about using the US flag and the singing of the American national anthem by protesters, supposedly as a symbol of democracy. Beyond this, of course, many of the people marching "for democracy" quite likely think of the US as a model for us all.
This is truly chilling.
Democracy, yes! But not the United States model
If the US is the model that Hong Kong people wish to pursue, it would be wise for everyone to better understand what that really means before we even consider going in that direction.
In America in 2019 so far, 585 people have been fatally shot by police. Two months ago, a 24-year-old father of three (a black man), Ryan Twyman, was unarmed inside a car he was driving in reverse in a parking lot when two Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies approached and fired 34 rounds. He's dead. And he's only the latest example in a sordid history of such events. Extrajudicial killings are just far too common in this "bastion of democracy". Their M.O. can be tersely explained: "Shoot first. Ask questions later." Contrast that with the currently pressured Hong Kong police, who despite coming under vicious attacks repeatedly for more than two months and having their police stations laid siege to, have yet to fire a single shot at the protesters!
There are now between 50,000 and 60,000 homeless people in Los Angeles, a situation made obvious by the tent cities springing up on the sidewalks. Sewage flows on the sidewalks, and there are rats and typhus on the sidewalks, and even inside Los Angeles City Hall.
Hong Kong is pristine and civilized by comparison!
Yes, you say, but America is the home of a free press and freedom of speech. So, I ask you to look more closely, because when you do, you find something truly nasty under the surface.
Just this week, information has been leaked showing that Google was deliberately skewing search results in favor of Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election, moving more than 2 million votes in her direction. And this is supposed to be a democracy?
Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube have been busy blocking, banning, demonetizing, and simply removing people to prevent them sharing views contrary to the mainstream-media (MSM) narrative that is used to control the population in the US (and, increasingly, globally). Twitter and Facebook are literally the arms and legs of the US state (i.e. the "intelligence community"), and as a citizen you are not allowed to challenge the narratives that you are being sold from the center.
But it's much worse than that. The United States Department of State, supported by the MSM, is quite prepared to use raw violence in order to stop free speech and maintain control of the narrative that the US is somehow a place we should all aspire to emulate.
Let's look at the situation with Julian Assange and Chelsea Manning (previously Bradley Manning) as a case in point. Chelsea Manning leaked information showing US war crimes, including a video showing a US Apache helicopter gunship murdering Iraqis (and Reuters journalists) on the ground. This information was published by Assange and WikiLeaks.
Since 2010, the US, in cahoots with the UK and Sweden, has been relentless in hunting down Assange, initially forcing him to seek asylum in the Embassy of Ecuador in London. More recently, the UK violated Assange's asylum, and he is now locked up in a high-security prison intended for terrorists.
The UN has ruled that Assange has been subject to arbitrary detention for the last nine years, and Nils Melzer, the UN special rapporteur on torture, recently published a report laying out very clearly how Assange has been psychologically tortured during this arbitrary detention. Sadly, Assange is in need of urgent medical attention, which is being denied. He could well die in prison.
All of this for the crime of publishing information about state crimes, which the State Department would prefer to remain hidden.
This is not the behavior of a democracy. Yet this crushing of journalistic dissent has been perpetrated by so-called models of democracy, the US and the UK, with support from Sweden and even Australia. With full support from the mainstream media no less!
Sadly, the situation in Hong Kong is not simply one of erroneous flag-waving. It goes much deeper, and we need to understand what truly is happening here. Leaders of the Hong Kong "democratic" movement, including Joshua Wong Chi-fung, Jimmy Lai Chee-ying, and various "pan-dem" luminaries (some LegCo representatives), have been reported meeting with key players in the US government, including Senator Marco Rubio, National Security Adviser John Bolton, and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
Who are these people? They are core members of the US Empire, who see their role in life as to use military power to create regime change that will expand that very empire. This group recently came out in full support of Juan Guaido, a puppet who was designated by the US government as president of Venezuela, even though Venezuela has a duly elected president. When the Venezuelan people rejected this arrangement, the US resorted to its old practice of funding a coup attempt to overthrow the Venezuelan government. Luckily, it failed.
Forty thousand people in Venezuela are already dead from US sanctions, and US sanctions on Syria and Iran are creating great harm. This group, which openly supports the Hong Kong "democracy" movement, is clearly intent on waging war in any state in the world that refuses to kneel in submission to the US Empire. Current moves against Iran are just a case in point.
So let us be clear. The US does not care about democracy in Hong Kong. It only cares about "US interests". The US today is intent on blocking China's rise, and will happily foment violence in Hong Kong if that will help block China. And they don't care how many Hong Kong people get hurt in this process, as long as the US wins.
Be warned. Hong Kong "democrats", be careful what you wish for!
