(CGTN)The Chengdu Motor Show (CDMS) has opened in the provincial capital of China’s southwestern Sichuan Province. This annual event, now in its 22nd edition, occupies a total display area of 200,000 square meters. It’s located just inside Western China International Expo City of the Tianfu New Area.

The show, which runs from September 5 to 14, has the theme “Road to Western China.” It has attracted over 130 automotive brands, including German, American, French, Japanese, South Korean automakers.

Chengdu tops auto market in western China

Organizers told CGTN that the show, as a business card of the city, responds to the strategic plan to build Chengdu into an international consumption-based city.

As the intersection of the trade route of the Belt and Road Initiative and the Yangtze River Economic Belt, Chengdu has ranked the first among new first-tier cities. Nationwide, it has a GDP ranking of eighth and its automobile market is showing resilience in an unfavorable environment.

In 2018, China's auto market recorded its first negative growth in nearly 30 years, but sales remained the best in western China.

Over the years, the Chengdu Motor Show has been a frontier highland for major brands to explore the western market. To achieve a good sales performance in the coming peak season, automobile brands have continued to increase their investment in CDMS 2019.

'New Energy' sector displays a new future for cars

Due to a decrease in subsidies, the sales of new energy vehicles in July went down more than before. However, benefiting from the transformation and upgrading of the auto industry, China’s new energy vehicles still enjoy huge potential for development.

It’s worth mentioning that the "new powers of car manufacturing” – NIO, Xiaopeng Motors, AIWAYS AUTO and SERES – have debuted at the “New Energy Vehicle Zone.” Weltmeister and Qiantu have showcased their innovative concepts to millions of car fans in southwestern China.

Moreover, Renault City K-ZE, the first pure electric model of Dongfeng Renault, has been released for the first time. SAIC Volkswagen is presenting its newly launched first pure electric model – e-Lavida.

At CDMS, super luxury brands such as Maserati, Porsche, McLaren, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Bentley and Rolls-Royce and luxury brands including BMW, Mercedes Benz, Audi, Lexus, Volvo and Cadillac have brought their lineups and ignited the fervor of the most exciting luxury auto show in western China.

The organizers have also launched the first outdoor test drive area which is free to onsite visitors, providing a new experience of car-watching and test-driving. Visitors can feel the notable elegance and charm of Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Porsche, Lamborghini and other super luxury cars.
