Some excerpts from AFP:
COLOMBO: Sri Lanka'sPresident Saturday (Jul 6) announced he will not allow his government toconclude a proposed military deal that would allow US troops free access to theisland's ports.
Maithripala Sirisena said hewas opposed to the draft Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) that the twocountries are negotiating to further strengthen their military ties.
He did not name the powers heaccused of trying to gain a military foothold in his Indian Ocean islandrepublic of 21 million people.
However, it was a thinly veiledreference to the US which is keen on strengthening their existing militarycooperation.
A year ago, Washington announced itwas granting US$39 million to boost maritime security in Sri Lanka as Chinadeveloped its strategic hold on the Indian Ocean island.
It was not so long ago that the US government also had a defense security deal with India where the US would sell defense technology to India and help set up defense manufacturing capability in India as well. India has a firm position that any technology set-up in India by foreigners must also manufacture in India. What is noteworthy in this matter is that while the US government accuses China of "forced transfer" and "stealing" of technology and treating Chinese academics and scientists as "spies", it is willing to just hand over even defense technology to India. So, why this double standard? With this recent proposition to Sri Lanka, it is clear as crystal that the US government is trying to engulf China with military bases. In this case, India and Sri Lanka on the west with Japan and South Korea on the east; not to forget Guam.
Looks like the US is determined to prepare a confrontation with China. To the US government, if negotiation does not work, military might will decide. This is the mentality of a rogue nation bent on bullying and domineering over other nations. If other nations do not take note of that and still have the cold war mentality, especially the "5-eyes" nations, war could be inevitable. China cannot be blamed for being cautious. By the way, if this war should happen, all will suffer, including "winners" and "losers", if we can really think that is the outcome. Those who think the US and other "strong" countries will survive unscathed will be disappointed. The only way to prevent this is to stop the rogue nation, which is the US.
