(CGTN) Chinese officials in Beijing and Shanghai are conducting hotel inspections after shocking hidden camera footage revealed that cleaning staff at several highbrow hotel franchises had wiped cups with unclean towels used by customers.

Authorities in the Chinese capital launched on-site inspections on Thursday at four hotels involved in the scandal, while regulators in Shanghai say that violators will be punished if wrongdoing is confirmed.

A user on Chinese social media kicked off this frenzy after posting a recording online on Wednesday evening showing these unsavory incidents in what he claimed was 14 out of the 147 five-star and luxury hotel branches he had stayed in for the past six years.

"The problem has long existed in nearly 100 percent of hotels around the country," he wrote on his Weibo account. "The real situation was worse than what the video has presented," he told The Paper.

The globally renowned brands that have been named and shamed in the video include Conrad, Park Hyatt, Four Seasons, Shangri-La, Bulgari, Le Royal Meridien, Aman, Ritz-Carlton, Mandarin Oriental, Sheraton, Waldorf Astoria, Peninsula and Puli.

Half of these hotels are located in Shanghai, while four are in Beijing and three in the cities of Fuzhou, Guiyang, and Nanchang.

As of 6 p.m. on Thursday, six of the hotels implicated in the video have made public apologies and promised to strengthen staff training and supervision.

This is not the first time that well-known hotels have failed basic hygiene checks in China. In December 2017, members of custodial staff at the luxury hotels of Sheraton, Shangri-La and Kempinski were filmed using the same brush to clean toilets, wash basins and even crockery.

It's so disgusting; the things the hotels do behind our back is unforgiveable! Their licences should be revoked!  But the blame lies squarely on the supervising authorities for their failure to check on the hotels; they, like other departments, prefer to assume things are fine, as long as no one complains.  This attitude of public servants leads  hotels to cut corners and engage in malpractices!  Everytime the media expose wrongdoings, the officials scurry to damage control; disgusting attitude.  This is the tip of thre iceberg, many cases go unreported  If 5-Star hotels engage in such despicable behavior, the rest are most likely doing the same!  Travellers beware!   Sales of disposable cutleries have shot up since this report was released; obviously travellers are taking no chances!

Since the five-star hotels are found with poor hygiene standards, one could hardly imagine how filthy the ordinary hotels would be. It is a race to the bottom to cut costs to maximise profit at the expense of quality - all industries are the same.

I assume the brush you talking about is a toilet brush, I would think it must be difficult to wash crockery with a toilet brush

They should be closed for a period of one month to teach management a lesson. So that they have to cancel all reservations in that period, that would have a 'I won't book that chain of hotel again' effect !!

5* hotels are cheap in China compared to the Western World so it's every visitors first choice to stay in them, but if this is what is going on in 5* hotels as you say what would a 3* or 2* be like.

Dreadful
