CAIXIN MEDIA CO LTD, a Chinese financial media company, announced on Monday that it will introduce a paywall model to protect its digital content from copyright violations. Southern Metropolis Daily commented on Wednesday:

Caixin's seemingly aggressive move to build a paywall has not come out of the blue. Unlike many of its domestic rivals, the financial media company has always been a bulwark against copyright infringements by exposing them on a regular basis.

It may be just a matter of time before it decides to make its digital content available only via paid subscription.

As opposed to many traditional newspapers and news agencies that have introduced paywalls for their digitized content, internet-based media outlets such as The Huffington Post and Business Insider often grant users free access. Chinese readers, too, have taken free online news for granted since the emergence of news websites in the late 1990s.

In China, more than anywhere else, news should be free to everyone.

Simply because the state uses uses so much tax revenue (asnd forces media to use their revenue) to sensor and filter news and other media, and forces news agencies as tools for its propaganda, that the public should not have to pay to see whatever real content remains to be seen.

In other countries it is more understandable.

Chinese people would like accept some freebies from supermarket and vendors are willing to attract more consumers to buy in their store. this is very effective way for selling.
but in the culture fields if you carry out apywall system, I worry nobody will scan your website. there are no way to Chinese people.
life is colorful with you.

The media company must have calculated its business risk before deciding to adopt the paywall method. Normally media companies give free news to attract more readers whose numbers increase enough to attract paying advertisers whose fees paid cover the cost of running of the news column.

The risk is when the paywall is erected, there could be a drop in subscribers; this will affect the advertising revenue even as it offers a side income from paywall fees collected. Whether latter will cover former remains to be seen.

In any case, if they which have been giving free now charges, it means the content quality won't improve dramatically in the near term to close the risk gap so generated by introducing the paywall method. So unless the content quality has been in high demand in the past, it won't be a payup deciding factor in the present which thus will carry forward into the future as well.

As an aside, the future asset is information relevant as a leveraging agent on assets, resources and expertise. But the problem is information if useful will mean more will try to get it which thus removes its differentiating advantage and so reduces its usefulness since it will create more competition.  The dynamics of the economics of information is an interesting subject and should be taught somewhere.

The world is awash in too many things to read and not enough time and energy for the mind to digest. Often it is counterproductive because much content is regurgitated into other forms from the same points. A second course should be taught on how to tease out key points and how to apply them.
