A growing number of pet owners in China are now more willing to buy luxury items for their furry friends, pushing the pet market to grow an average of 20.5 percent each year by 2020, according to an industry report by Guangzhou Yourpet Network Technology Inc.
The report, which stated the market would exceed 200 billion yuan ($29.5 billion) in sales by 2020, revealed the focus of the pet industry was no longer on just animal breeds and veterinary services, but a plethora of lifestyle-related products and services, including pet nutrition, styling and training.
It also highlighted devoted owners build a life around their pets, such as walking, talking to and spending time with their furry friends.
It seems the internet has been taken over by pet lovers who are resistless to posting photos and short videos of animals. A Weibo user in China, "Alias Used Specially for Recalling", who shares daily anecdotes and images of his Samoyed and a Scottish Fold, has attracted a fan base of more than 28 million.
However, not every pet lover has or eventually has a pet in their lifetime. Cloud pet-raising, derived from cloud collaboration, is a new phrase coined in China to refer to people who follow the update and movement of animals online, but are in no position to raise a pet on their own.
Having an animal can be the panacea for city loneliness and work exhaustion, but raising one also means a lot of responsibility and cost.
