Zhostovo is a village in Russia which is famous for its traditional paintingstyle. It originated there in midst 19th century. The main item theytraditionally use as a target for their skill application are the metal traysfirst coated with a few layers of putty and then painted by Zhostovo techniqueand lacquered. If you like to see more of those as well how they are beingproduced welcome here:

So it originated in one village near Moscow artisans ofwhich were highly influenced by the works of Ural masters and their style ofpainting flowers on the metal. Little by little near by villages of Zhostovostarted copying the style and the whole craftsman industry appeared respondingto  the growing demand of such trays.

They could be used as casual items for serving food ordrinks and also as a decorative piece - hanging on the wall or standing on theflat surface.

There are two types of trays - stamped and forged. Thestamped ones are being stamped on the electric pressing machine above.

And the forged ones are being done by hand.

First cutting metal in hand.

Then being hammered and forged.

Wire is being inserted inside the edges to strengthen them.

Then the future tray goes to oven, then being coated withthree layers of black enamel.

The painting itself is being done in twostages. At first artist puts a outline of the flowers. It is being done withoutany prior sketch and simultaneously on a few pieces.

Making the flower bouquets artist rotates the tray on hisknees so that his hand stays in the same position all the time.

The edges of the tray are being ornamented too. Also you cansee the artist's signature on each tray.

Here the trays being cleaned up.

And are put into the oven.

Another artist doing his job.

Real paint is being used, just like an oil painting withpalette and tons of different brushes.

Here is how nice it turns out to be.

Here you can see the lady artist holding the smaller tray onher knees with a few more around her - also take a look she is bare footed - sothe atmosphere in place is more than of creative studio rather than a massproduction sweatshop.

The the paintings are being lacquered two or three times andfurther being dried in special dryers on different temperatures.

Covering a tray with light lacquer.

And showing the ready made Zhostovo tray.

Besides the traditional flower bouquets they make the trayswith old Russian landscapes.

Also there is a school teaching kids and adults basics ofthe craft.

Real working artists teach the classes.

Here you can see boy has got something looking more or lesslike a real thing.

Russian celebrities on the visit to the factory.

And those are some rare old pieces that are stored in themuseum on site.

Would you like to get one of those? I think they areavailable freely on ebay for example.

And big thanks to the photographers who went there and madethe photos.
