Is it time to have a serious rethink about Chinese traffic laws, especially those involving motorcycles?
When the Chinese reaffic laws were written road users were split into 3 groups, pedestrians, non motorised vehicles and motorised vehicles. In those day traffic was much lighter and the definitions were clearer, pedestrians walk, bicycles were non motorised and the rest were motorised vehicles.
Nowadys there are far less bicycles and far more cars but what seems to muddy the waters are the electric motorcycles that seen not to have any laws to obey. In my view they should be treated as motorised vehicles, after all they can reach alarming speeds.
Maybe all divers of powered vehicles should have to obtain a driving licence, insurance and a vehicle safety certificate ( many motorcyles lack basic maintenance as can be seen by wobbly wheels all too often )before they are allowed on the road and the rights and wrongs of riding these machines should be made clear, it is not uncommon for them to be ridden on the footpath, through red lights, across pedestrian crossings, on the wrong side of the street and my pet hate sitting in the middle of the road at road junctions obstructing other traffic.
With the rise of courier companies we have also seen the number of dangerously overloaded motorcycles on the road, motorcycles are not designed to carry large numbers of parcels and as such should not be allowed to do so.
Finally a standard motorcycle is designed for either single rider or a rider and one passenger, not the whole family as seen far too often and safety concerns are not taken into account with regard to helmets for all people, not only the driver, this should be a matter of law and would save countless lives.
China has progressed so much in recent years is it not time that basic laws caught up with the facts?
