In our day and age, no one who is health-conscious would suck a raw egg and possibly contract salm ...

Another "guess" on its origin:
"It's a roundabout insult to someone by comparing them to a dog.
In the 19th century, at least in America and possibly in Britain, sucking eggs is what dogs were reputed to do on the sly.  When you have a hunting dog and he finds a bird's nest, he's supposed to just point and not damage anything.  Some dogs with "soft mouths" were even capable of picking up an egg in their mouth and bringing it to their master undamaged.  A dog who considered his appetite over his master's will was considered a bad dog and would likely be verbally scorned as "bastard" if male or "bitch" if female.  This carried over into human references, so one would say to someone who was annoying you "Oh, go suck an egg" as an implication that that person was no more useful than a bad dog who would suck the "meat" out of an eggshell."
