A five-year-old boy from southwestern China’s Chongqing municipality, diagnosed with allotriophagy and thalassemia, is reportedly addicted to eating dry mud. He consumes over 100 grams per day.
The boy, with the assumed name Wang Yong, has eaten over 50 kilograms of mud in the past three years, leaving a 80-centimeter-long, 30-centimeter-wide hole in his family’s fence, Chongqing Economic Times reported on Monday.
According to the boy’s father, Wang started eating mud three years ago, and now the craving forces him to ingest about 100 grams every day. But, even stranger, he only eats dry mud from his family's fence, the father added.
Wang’s family has tried all kinds of methods to stop the boy from eating mud, even covering the wall with animal feces at one point. But the boy always manages to find a way around it.
Tan Qiu, vice-president of Chongqing Three Gorges Central Hospital, said that parasites and/or a deficiency of microelements may be causing the disease. The mud probably does contain certain microelements, but it is impossible to be sure without further analysis, Tan explained.
