The first of many trains traversing the "Silk Road" has arrived in Tehran, carrying 32 containers of goods and making the 9,500km trip in 14 days, while travelling through Kazakstan and Turkmenistan, which is about a month faster than a ship journey from Shanghai to Iran. Currently a third of Iran's trade is with China, which is Iran's top customer for oil exports.

As Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Iran's Pres. Hassan Rouhani last month agreed to build economic ties worth $600 billion over the next 10 years, this is new transport route will help to facilitate these ties.

Well done China and Iran- keep up the good work.

Well, by air the distance is about half that: under 5'000 kilometers. Why do the trains have to cove ...

Simple: by air it's a straight line distance, by land there're always some geographic obstacles to overcome (e.g. mountains, lakes etc.). The China Daily report states a distance of over 10,000 km. Either way, it adds up to about 700 km per day- not bad for such a train. As to differing track widths, looks like that problem was solved somehow- perhaps new tracks with a standard width.

Initially one train per month is planned, with more in the pipeline if required. No problems with storms or pirates, the trains will traverse friendly countries, and what is carried is the business of China, Iran and no-one else.

32 containers per train- not a bad start.
