Every country needs leaders, but that doesn't necessarily make them elites. The name has a corrupt ...

Look at Chinese airlines, they have first class cabins on many and most of the customers in there are Chinese, are they not seen as elites?

I take business class sometimes and should I call myself elite? Call it what you like but as leaders they should not be elitists.

Double standard and language

Difference matters as it makes everyone unique. Even identical twins are not 100% the same. Even twins can look very different. Check out the black and white twins on the Internet. Being unique arouses interest yet the tendency and pressure to conform is always there bcoz difference is also the cause of conflict. the genetic difference between man and chimp is only 1% yet the reference of "monkey-like" is usually more on the -ve side bcoz gene is inherently selfish and selfishness always values self more than non-self. One could deal with difference by confrontation and elimination or by tolerance and assimilation. The more long term and energy conscious one tends to opt for the later.

Double standard is as inevitable as differences in life as long as every one is unique. However hard one tries, one can never see the world in the same perspective as another's.  For the neutral bystanders, the more obvious double standard is more likely to be more poorly perceived.  Based on my exposure, I have never gathered the impression that the brits made much effort to learn the local languages in their colonies otherwise Aussie should be speaking more of a mixed type of English with fairly apparent influence from the aboriginal's language. Did the brits learn the American Indians language? The fact the american natives were referred as Indian should be telling enough. How many English speaking ppl moving to live in Scotland would make an effort to learn Scottish?

Languages come and go. It's primary function is for communication. Cultural identity is only secondary, which should give way when it's in conflict with the primary function. The language situation in hk is more due to ignorant and twisted arrogance and politics rather than cultural issues otherwise how to explain the generous allowance for the culturally far more different English and the opposite attitude towards the culturally similar putonghua?

Humor and 德

The Brits seem to take great pride in their sense of humor to a national level. There is much humor to be sensed on chinese forum too but humor is probably appreciated by us chinese to a lesser extend. A culture based on tolerance is destined to prize 温厚融洽 and condemn 尖酸刻薄. Humor tends to side with 尖酸more than 温厚. Humor being the product of wit usually comes at the expense of the less competent. Our culture values empathy(德) more than wit (才智). The better chinese brains are probably culturally conditioned to be less forthcoming with humor.  The original word in chinesre equivalent for humor is 诙谐,  meaning ridicule within the scope of harmony, implies a more controlled sense of humor.  相声 is the chinese equivalent of the western standup comedian show but is usually done by 2 persons. I wonder if the difference is somehow also the result of more concern on 德.
