Eating out in China has always been a noisy experience, but are things changing? Look around the tables now and all you see are people glued to their cellphones. Of course the advantage of using chopsticks gives you a hand free for the phone. Couples ignore each other (unless they are messaging each other). But no one is actually talking.

On the metro I'm accustomed to being the only laowai in the carriage, but now I feel self conscious about being the only person not attached to a phone. I'm also pretty adept at dodging the silent battery driven bicycles and motorbikes on the pavement but now there is the additional hazzard of colliding with the unseeing cellphone zombies. For a really scary experience check out the motorists (and every other kind of vehicle driver) talking or messaging whilst driving!

Would anyone else like to have a magic button which switches off every cellphone just to witness the horror and panic on people's faces?
