13. This remarkable shot was taken by Martin Le-May while he was walking with his wife through Hornchurch Country Park in Havering, London. The pair heard “distressed squawking” before witnessing the woodpecker’s “struggle for life” as the weasel clung to its back. The amateur photographer from Essex told ITV that he “feared the worst” for the bird, which appeared to be “unnaturally hopping about like it was treading on a hot surface” before it flew in their direction. Fortunately for the woodpecker the weasel fell off and it flapped its way to safety. (Picture: Martin Le-May)

17. A brown noddy hitches a ride on a pelican, waiting for its chance to claim any fish that the big-billed bird catches in the Itabaca Channel, Galapagos Islands. 23. Border collie Hekan proves he's no one-trick-pooch by helping his owner to train horses. The talented one-year-old's name is a shortened form of 'he can do anything' and he lives up to this every day as he lends owner Steve Jefferys a helping paw at Equestrian Excellence in Melbourne. His duties include holding the horses as they're saddled, taking them for walks on a lead and fetching items. But it doesn't stop there; the wonder dog can also ride horses. Steve comments: 'He's an incredibly talented dog. He's basically my secretary.' Steve and Hekan train stunt horses for stage and film. (Picture: David Caird/Newspix/REX)
